Lama
Palmo Baker is an experienced teacher and
translator in the Kagyu Lineage of Tibetan Buddhism. A student of Lama Norlha Rinpoche
for 15 years,
she completed
two three-year retreats under his guidance at
Kagyu Thubten Choling Monastery in
Wappingers Falls, New York. She currently resides in Cambridge, MA,
where she teaches meditation and is pursuing a doctorate in Buddhist
Studies at Harvard. Lama Palmo served as Rinpoche's translator during
his visit to New Hampshire in November 2004.
Lama Palmo's description of this seminar: The countries of India and
Tibet have yielded some of the greatest meditation masters the world has
ever known, and many of them were women. We have access to the wisdom of
these realized women through a legacy of "power songs," some
hundreds of years old, which embody the profound messages of Buddhist
meditation. This seminar is open to all spiritual
seekers, Buddhist or non-Buddhist; those interested in learning about
meditation or Buddhism, and those interested this rare genre of women's
poetry from Asia.
The seminar will include presentation of the songs, a discussion of
their meaning, singing of the songs in English (having a good ear is not
required!), questions and answers, and meditation instruction. At the
Friday evening session, Lama Palmo will present and explain the songs.
The two sessions Saturday will be structured as an all-day meditation
retreat, using the songs as meditation instruction; either Saturday
session may also be attended independently if you can't come to both.
All three sessions will be held at the
Portsmouth Unitarian Church
(South Church), 292 State Street, Portsmouth, at Karnan House, the small
building on Court Street directly behind the main church building. There
is a requested donation of $12 for each session, or $30 for all three
sessions. Chair or cushion seating is available.
